The HBO Emmy award winning series "Real Sports' is not so much about sports as it is an exploration of an athlete's personal struggle and the courage, devotion, sacrifice and perseverance required to overcome it. Light middleweight fighter and former military amateur boxing champion Boyd Melson personifies this profile and will share his special story in this month's installment of the program on Tuesday, April 16 at 10 pm ET/PT.
It will be the second consecutive episode of 'Real Sports' where a boxer has been featured, with former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson appearing in a segment of the program last month. While Melson may never reach the heights of Tyson, he is a heavyweight champion outside of the ring and an ambassador to the sport of whom fans and the boxing community can be proud.
Melson, a full-time medical device sales representative and a captain in the Army Reserves, donates his entire purse to justadollarplease.org for spinal cord injury research. He formed "Team Fight To Walk", a charitable organization created with his friend and "soul mate" Christan Zaccagnino, to raise awareness and funds for stem cell research with the aim to conduct clinical trials in the United States. Zaccagnino became paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair after diving into a swimming pool almost 20 years ago. This brave young woman has been the source of inspiration, drive and commitment for the 31-year old Melson who is determined to see her walk again.
This incredible story of selflessness and love was previously shared with Boxing 101 and has been featured in other publications such as Sports Illustrated and ESPN.com. It will now be shared with a broader audience through this upcoming appearance on 'Real Sports' which debuts on April 16 at 10 pm ET/PT and will air as follows:
