Boxing continues with its comeback to the Big Apple when the legendary Apollo Theater in New York City plays host to world championship boxing on March 2. Tickets go on sale today for the Showtime televised bout featuring WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon against fast-rising Jayson Velez.
In the latest chapter of boxing's rich history of Mexico vs Puerto Rico, Mexican Ponce De Leon (44-4, 35 KO's) makes the first defense of the title he won from Jhonny Gonzalez in September. Knockout artist Velez (20-0, 15 KO's) has the makings to be the next Puerto Rican superstar as he fights for his first world title following an impressive third round technical knockout over Salvador Sanchez in December.
Richard Abril (17-3-1, 8 KO's) and Sharif Bogere (23-0, 15 KO's) face-off for the vacant WBA lightweight championship in the co-main event and undefeated featherweight sensation Gary Russell Jr. (21-0, 13 KO's) will fight Russia's Vyacheslav Gusevin (20-2, 5 KO's) in a 10-round non-title bout.
The night of fights, presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Miguel Cotto Promotions, marks the first time in over 15 years that the Apollo has hosted professional boxing. The last bout held there took place in November 1997 when Hasim Rahman successfully defended his USBA heavyweight title against Obed Sullivan by majority decision.
Tickets, priced at $300, $200, $100, $50 and $25, not including applicable taxes and service charges, go on sale today at noon EST and will be available for purchase at the Apollo Theater box office, www.ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations or by calling 800-745-3000.
